Your best friend picked you as her maid of honor and now you have to come up with a maid of honor speech at wedding celebrations too. Ok, admitted: the thought of giving a speech may take a moment of getting used to, but don’t forget that it offers you a great way to express your care for your friend and honor her in front of a whole audience. You have a unique opportunity to paint a verbal portrait of your friend and make her shine in front of everybody; a chance to strengthen the ties of your friendship.

There are several responsibilities in your role as maid of honor, aside from your speech at wedding receptions. The one of uppermost importance would be to be there for the bride from beginning of the wedding preparations all the way to the moment she’ll take of for her honeymoon.
With all the stress of wedding preparations and decision making, it’s not surprising if a bride, normally new at this, would feel nervous or even panicky. Let her feel your presence and availability, your willingness to help out wherever and however needed.

- how, when and where to have the bridal shower and the bachelorette party, if applicable
- make sure you line up all the details that belong to your role throughout the ceremony, for example safekeeping the ring of the groom until the time is right, holding the bride’s bouquet during the ceremony (just make sure you’ll give it back to her before the new couple walks down the aisle once the ceremony is over), arranging the train of the wedding dress just so if and when needed
- and as the cherry on the cake, to give a maid of honor speech, at wedding celebrations or rehearsal dinners pretty much a given these days, from your heart to theirs.
It’s expected for you to cover the cost of your attire (dress, jewelry and shoes). The bridal party has the responsibility to purchase their own attire. Every very once in a while a generous (and wealthy, I might add) bride will buy everybody’s outfit, but don’t bet the farm on it.

For your maid of honor speech, at wedding reception or rehearsal dinner, you want to make sure that you’re shining a bright light on the bride and her groom. Being as close to her as you are, you have a unique perspective on who the bride is, based on the memories you two share. When you describe the bride, use glowing colors, that’ll even bring our her quirks in a positive light (if you even dare to go down that path).
